The NHS at 60

The NHS at 60
The NHS turned 60 in June 2008 and as an organisation has been in a constant state of change, development and challenge. Arguably, it is now undergoing the biggest period of change in its history and some of its most challenging times. Recent re-configuration of SHA's and PCT's, the shared services agenda, complex partnership arrangements, World Class Commissioning (WCC), the separation of PCT provider and commissioning arms, the emergence of Foundation Trusts and the implications of Lord Darzi's review are just some of the key issues facing the sector at present. Added to this are the very real and current effects of the economic downturn and the consequences of the huge hole in the public purse, which will force the NHS to face up to some tough choices in the coming months and years.
The way in which organisations react to the challenge will be critical in these difficult times. Adapting to this change by identifying skills and behaviour gaps within the organisation will be crucial in building robust leadership teams with the skills to enable organisations to be fit for the future. Recent research that GatenbySanderson has undertaken has highlighted some of the key skills that are likely to be needed. These include the ability to lead change, inspire teams and transform organisations; commercial; marketing; project management; procurement expertise; partnership working and the ability to get closer to the customer and really engage with the community. It is likely that many of these skills will be found in other areas of the public sector, especially Local Government and within the private and voluntary sectors.
As organisations change and develop, as public service organisations merge and integrate and as close partnership working becomes the norm, there will be increasing pressure to attract, retain and develop the talented leaders who will help to deliver this large-scale reconfiguration of services. At GatenbySanderson, the largest provider of executive recruitment services in the public sector, we have an unrivalled ability to match outstanding leaders with demanding roles.
